I am fearless like Kris Aquino

October 26, 2016 Leave a Comment

Ms. Kris Aquino is one formidable Filipina we have today. I’m not really a fan but when she talks on TV, I listen…people listen to her raves, rants, and wise words. But just like everybody else, whether you’re a celebrity, a beauty queen, a politician, a working mom, or a housewife, all of us have fears. At the Ariel’s Wash Your Fears Summit, I was able to recognize and overcame my fears along with Kris Aquino and other 100 Fearless Filipinas.

Reasons why I work

August 11, 2014 9 Comments

If you’ll be given a choice to be a working mom or be a plain housewife, what will you choose? If money is not a problem, I’d definitely say I want to be a plain housewife in a heartbeat! I’d love to spend every waking day and witness every milestone with Gwen. But then again, there are realities I have to deal aside from financial reasons.

Iba ang alagang mommy!

September 25, 2012 38 Comments

The other day, yaya Gladys said, “Ang laki na ni Gwen ate no? Dati tinutulak ko pa yan sa stroller sa labas para makatulog.” She’s referring to her routine way back in January and February of this year, she would put Gwen in her stroller, give milk and then walk down the street to make Gwen fall asleep for her afternoon nap. Now, Gwen is too big to be confined in a stroller and too stubborn when it’s time to sleep (galit sa tulog tong batang to eh).

I got teary-eyed when realization came that my baby is now all grown up. She’s a toddler now, she will be a tween tomorrow, and she will be an adult in the near future. Once she became an adult, she might not need me anymore. Gosh, just typing this sentence made me cry =(

Why I don’t read parenting books and sites anymore…

April 15, 2012 9 Comments

When I became pregnant, I became an avid reader of every parenting and baby sites, I even subscribed so that I won’t miss an update weekly. The first thing I read in my inbox is “Your baby this week…”. One instance, I got worried because from the update, I should feel a movement in my tummy yet I’m still not experiencing those. Turns out that my pregnancy milestone is a bit late.

When I gave birth to Gwen, my sis-in-law gave us a baby book, a very detailed and good book, from feeding your newborn baby, how to bathe a newborn, and how to train her sleep through the night. I just have to make it in bold letters because that’s the one thing we tried to do for two months. For the first two months of her life, Gwen is wide awake during the night, and she has crying bouts that starts at 8 pm. It’s the most difficult stage, I suffered post-partum deppression too, perhaps due to lack of sleep and stress because I don’t know how to pacify her during her crying bouts. From the baby book, it suggests that we have to turn cold turkey at the baby or the cry it out method, this way, she will be trained to sleep for longer periods. But how the heck I can resist to carry my baby if she’s crying nonstop??? Can you bear not to pay attention when your baby’s crying? So I just read the book for other topics except sleep training because obviously, that didn’t work for us. Thankfully, Gwen started sleeping at night when she turned two months and only wakes up twice just to feed.

I got weekly updates of what to expect from my baby, your baby should be smiling by now, your baby should be coo-ing, your baby should be talking, your baby should be this and that…. As an excited stage mommy, I would watch out for those milestones and then get worried when she’s not doing what the email said. Paranoid me would often wonder if she has developmental delays, etc… Oh and it doesn’t help when some relatives and friends would compare their kids with Gwen, “Si ano, naglalakad na nung _ months pa lang…” “Si _, nagsasalita na nung _ months pa lang”. It’s like Babylympics, I tell ya!

One thing I learned, each baby is UNIQUE, just be patient with them achieving their milestones at their own time. Enjoy each day, with new milestones or not, because babies grow so fast. When Gwen was still a baby, we wished that she could walk already so that we won’t carry her anymore. Now that she’s walking, we wished she’s just a tiny baby sleeping in our arms.

Learn to trust your instincts too, mommies. That’s the gift of mothers, they will immediately know something’s wrong with their kids no other parenting and baby books can tell you.

Make those parenting sites as your guide but don’t let it rule your parenting style, since each baby is unique, each parent also has her own way of dealing with your child’s behavior. You are the mommy, and so you are the expert.

First hospital admission

March 25, 2012 1 Comment

Wondering why I’ve been quiet last week? It’s an exhausting week for us because Gwen got admitted at Capitol Medical Center because of UTI and appearance of rashes which the doctors said are just viral. Saturday and Sunday, Gwen had fever (38.6 C and 39.6 C) only during night time, she’s really ill because she doesn’t want to play and would just cling to me or Jeff to be able to put to sleep. We took a leave from work to visit her pedia on Monday morning, turned out that her doctor was out of the country but she was examined by her doctor’s reliever. She said that if Gwen still has fever until Tuesday, we should get her urine for urinalysis and also get a CBC. But come Monday night, we really got worried because she kept on crying, doesn’t want to drink her milk and eat and can’t sleep. Her temperature is only at around 38 C but still, we’re worried of her crying bouts. So we decided to take her to the ER of Capitol Medical Center.

Funny thing was when we’re inside the car en route to the hospital, she became quiet and almost sleepy. We even joked that she’s just bored inside the house and would just want to roam around. We then reached CMC’s emergency room and proceeded with the usual SOP.
