My thoughts on recognition and awards, are they important?

April 18, 2019 1 Comment

We are now done with Grade 2, finally! Yesterday was Gwen’s Recognition Day, she got a Silver medal in Academics, and 10 medals for the competitions she won throughout the school year.

Gwen recognition

Before, na-coconscious ako when I post pics of Gwen’s achievements. Although I’m very selective with what I post, I didn’t post naman her quizzes, even her quarterly report card. But if you love posting them mommies, go ahead! I have nothing against it, and this is the purpose of my post nga :).

I don’t want to be a victim of #momshaming, na kesyo I’m bragging about my child’s achievements, and that it’s not a big deal because grades are not important in real life, character is more important. Na kesyo si Steve Jobs who is a college dropout nga, naging successful naman. I love the thinking-out-of-the-box concept and encouraging the kids to explore to reach their own potential but in reality, we are all bounded by rules, by laws of our country, and beliefs of our religion.

recognition day 2019

While it is true that numerical grades, awards, and medals does not define a student, it’s just right that students should be given proper recognition. Let’s celebrate their success because that means we value our children’s hard work. It builds their character even at an early age, they learn how to discipline and manage their time for play and studies. With Gwen, she knows that weekdays are no-gadget days, and pag may quarterly exams, we don’t go to the malls or out of town on weekends. Hindi naman para mag-review but for her not to catch a virus para hindi maging absent during exams. At Grade 2, she learned to be responsible and independent. She can do her homework and review for exams on her own. She knows the importance of education and she will SHOW UP no matter what, minsan nga ako pa nagsasabi na umabsent muna sya if she’s not feeling well pero hanggat kaya, papasok pa rin sya. She knows the value of education, alam nyang sayang ang tuition fee at syempre yung matututunan nya for that day kung umabsent sya.

Discipline, sense of responsibility, time management, independent… these are character traits that rewarded her the medals. And these traits will be her armor as she slowly steps into the real world.

So if asked if recognition if awards are important, it’s a resounding YES! Pinaghirapan ng anak nyo yan no!

Congratulations students! Always do your best. Congrats din sa ating mga mommies, bakasyon na finally, that means no waking up very early in the morning.
