Top Halloween Costumes for 2014

October 7, 2014 Leave a Comment

It’s only the first week of October but Gwen is already excited about her Halloween costume this year. She’s excited but I’m not, haha. You see, for the past 2 years, I’m the one who decides what will be her costume. But this year, I guess it’s the other way around. My strong-willed child decides on what she wears and I can’t let her talk out of it. This year, she’s bent on becoming Elsa at her school’s trick or treat, and then Peppa Pig at our company’s trick or treat. O di ba, may change costume pa? Toys R Us already has plenty of halloween costumes on display, and they do have the Elsa costume but in Large size only, but it’s Php 1500, for a costume! I still want to DIY her halloween costume, but an Elsa costume is so complicated.

For those who are already preparing for your kids’ halloween costumes, I compiled the Top Halloween Costumes for 2014.

Aksyon Laban sa Dengue with Calpol

October 7, 2014 Leave a Comment

Every time Gwen has a high fever, we are really paranoid that it might be dengue. Fortunately, all those high fevers were just viral. Last month, Gwen had on and off fever, but her fever is not high, just 37-38 C, and only occurs during night time. She’s and eating like her normal self. She just have cough and colds. On and off fever lasted for a week. The following week, her temperature went up to 39 C and she had rashes on her trunk and arms, that’s the time we went to the ER to have her blood checked. The blood chem results showed that her platelets were fine and that it’s only viral infection so we were able to go home, the doctor from the ER prescribed antibiotics. Fever was gone after 3 days of taking antibiotics together with Paracetamol, cough, and colds medicine.

Although her fever was gone, we were still worried because her rashes are still visible. Part of me was also scared after reading some stories on Facebook about a Dengue strain that begins initially as pneumonia or cough/colds, you’ll discover it’s dengue when it’s already too late, and that some kid already died. So to be sure, we had her blood checked again after a week, this is because we’re also leaving for Bangkok so para everything’s clear na. Thankfully, results were good and we were given a go signal by the pedia.

Long story I know, but the point is, dengue fever is no joke, especially to children. That’s why in my family, we closely monitor if Gwen has fever. Jeff is the one who keeps an eye on those rashes, and monitors her temperature too!

Kid-friendly attraction in Bangkok: Kidzania Bangkok

September 29, 2014 22 Comments

If you’re traveling to Bangkok with kids, it is a MUST that you visit Kidzania!

We went to Bangkok last September 11 to 16, when I was planning our itinerary, I searched for kid-friendly attractions in Bangkok for Gwen. And alas, I learned that there is a Kidzania in Bangkok, I got so excited because Kidzania Manila is still in the works here in the Philippines. Basically, Kidzania is an edutainment (educational entertainment) facility that lets children role-play. They get to do what adults do in real-life which is to work and spend their own money for leisure and food. There are plenty of professions to choose from for the kids, I think every profession in the real-world can be tried out: pilot, doctor, courier, fireman, veterinarian, factory worker, CSI, salesman, convenience store staff, etc. It’s so exciting, even Jeff who accompanied Gwen inside Kidzania had a great time and wants to go again once Kidzania opens here in Manila.

Update: KidZania Manila is now open!

Kidzania Bangkok Ticket Prices

Toddlers (2 to 3 years old): 350 Baht
Kids (4-14 years old): 850 Baht
Adults: 480 Baht
Senior Citizens: 400 Baht
Babies (0 to 1 year old): Free

Gwen is 3 years old, so we can pay 350 baht but the activities for toddlers are very limited, they can play at Urbano’s House which is just a playhouse, and watch a puppet show. Gwen cannot participate in the role-playing activities. I asked if we can get the 850 baht ticket instead so that she can maximize her time and do most of the activities and the Kidzania staff said it’s fine. But some activities like climbing and firefighting is only for 6 years old and above. Since we went all the way to Bangkok, we paid for the 850 baht ticket plus 480 baht for the adult companion. Kids under 8 years old should have a companion inside. The 850 ticket for the kids comes with a 50 kidZos (Kidzania’s currency) and a security bracelet.

Help build a #healthierPH for our children

September 21, 2014 Leave a Comment

Unilab through its Unilab Foundation does it again in empowering Filipinos to make a difference. Last week, I was invited to witness the launch of #healthierPH Volunteer Portal. The Portal breaks the usual notions about volunteerism: that volunteer work always means physical work; requires physical presence; or needs financial investments in order to make great contributions. In this digital world, even just one Facebook share or one retweet can make a difference, it can spread awareness. Remember that viral photo of an alleged kidnapping taken by a concerned citizen along Edsa? The authorities would not have been alerted and prompted to investigate further, but thanks to that photo all over social media, the policemen were able to shed light on that issue.

Sometimes, it only takes one responsible click to make an impact.

13 things to do before you travel as a family

September 9, 2014 Leave a Comment

We are going to Bangkok this Thursday, we will be back after 10 years and this time, we’ll be with Gwen. I hardly remember any details from my last trip except that we stayed in Baiyoke Suite Hote and went to Chatuchak and floating market. This time, my preparation for our Bangkok trip started right after we got back from Bohol. I extensively researched on accommodations, itineraries, food, and child-friendly tourist attractions.

In the Kitchen will be the category where I will post some of the recipes I cook for my family. I promise you these are super-duper easy recipes because I’m really not an expert in the kitchen plus the fact that I don’t want recipes with so many steps/how-tos. Just 4-6 instructions, anything more than that, I skip the page of my recipe book and look for simpler recipes. So newbies in the kitchen, I hope you’ll try my recipes or suggestions and let’s share kitchen secrets!

Look what this long weekend made me, finally tried baking Chocolate Chip cookies from scratch! It’s a first, before, I use those boxed mixes available for brownies. Now, I finally tested an easy and yummy Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe I can call my own.
